Last-Minute Tax Tips for Filing on Time
Updated April 2026
Tax Day is April 15. If you're one of the nearly 1 in 3 taxpayers who wait until the last two weeks to file, don't worry. There's plenty you can do to get your taxes done on time and get the best refund possible. Before the remaining days turn into hours, follow these simple tips.
Be Prepared
Make sure you have all your necessary tax paperwork. A checklist of the documents you need can help make sure nothing gets left off your return. Reviewing last year's return is a great way to remind yourself what you typically deduct and what you'll need this time.
If you're missing a document, don't panic. Replacing it may be as simple as a call to your company's HR department. Getting your documents in order now should still leave enough time to resolve any issues.
File Faster Online
The IRS offers free electronic filing options that can make filing faster, easier, and less prone to errors. If you want help but don't want to hire a professional, there are also online tax software options that can walk you through the process.
TurboTax is a widely used tax preparation tool, offering features like live expert chat and W-2 photo upload. It offers a free version and a paid deluxe version, depending on your tax situation. Other affordable or free options include H&R Block, Cash App Taxes (formerly Credit Karma Tax), and TaxAct.
File, Even If You Can't Pay
Filing on time even if you can't pay the full amount may cost you less than not filing at all. The penalty for not filing a return can be up to 10 times greater than the penalty for not paying in full. You can reduce late payment penalties and interest by paying as much as you can with your return. You could explore other options too, like a loan or an IRS installment agreement.
Need to cover an unexpected expense while you sort out your tax bill? The Perpay Marketplace lets you pay over time with no interest or fees, so you don't have to add high-interest debt on top of it.
File an Extension
If you can't file by the deadline, consider filing an extension. An extension gives you an additional 6 months to complete your return. Keep in mind: this is an extension to file, not an extension to pay. You'll still need to estimate what you owe and pay it, or risk paying interest.
If you're a U.S. citizen or resident alien living and working abroad, a member of the military on duty outside the U.S., or affected by a recent natural disaster, you may automatically qualify for an extension. For full details, visit the IRS website.
It's not panic time yet, but it's important to get organized and have a plan for getting your taxes done as soon as possible.
